York Festival of Ideas
York Festival of Ideas 2013
13th to 29th June 2013
York is an incredibly exciting, vibrant and diverse city, rich in heritage, discovery and an overriding sense of curiosity—in short a city where ideas spring to life and flourish.
York Festival of Ideas celebrates this vibrancy. This year's programme - with a theme of North and South – once again brings together a range of world-class speakers, exhibitions, performances and a host of stimulating and interactive experiences for people of all ages, including York residents and visitors to the city.
The terms North and South are loaded with cultural, social, economic, historical, scientific, geographical, industrial and broader resonances - both in the UK and throughout the world.
Celebrating York's status as 'capital of the North', this year's Festival will explore, question and celebrate ideas of 'North', both as a stand-alone idea, and in direct comparison with ideas of 'South'.
Highlights of this year’s programme, delivered by partners throughout the city, include:
- talks by Brian Sewell, Melvyn Bragg and Michael Wood
- a new writers’ day in partnership with Granta Magazine’s 2013 Best of Young British Novelists List
- a celebration of Anglo-Saxon York
- an exhibition at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall marking the 70th anniversary of the bouncing bomb and a showing of the Dambusters at City Screen
- an exciting and varied musical programme at the National Centre for Early Music
- a Festival Focus on Economics, Equality and Entrepreneurship in partnership with Joseph Rowntree Foundation and York Professionals with speakers including Danny Dorling, Kate Pickett, Zoe Williams, Jonathan Portes and Paul Johnson
- Creative Writing sessions with Faber Academy and York St John University
And much more!
